Equine headshaking syndrome is a poorly understood neuropathic pain condition presenting as uncontrollable shaking, flicking, or striking of the head. Therapeutic options are limited, and treatments are only partially successful. Currently, epidemiological information on headshaking in the Southern Hemisphere is lacking. An online survey was circulated to Australian owners of headshaking horses to collect information on triggers, symptoms, seasonality, treatments, and perceived treatment efficacy. The responses (n = 216) showed the mean age at symptom onset as 9.6 (±4.7) years. More geldings were affected than mares (76% vs. 24%), and symptom onset occurred later in geldings compared to mares (10.1 ± 4.7 vs. 7.9 ± 4.0 years; p < 0.01). Bright sunlight, wind, and high pollen were the most commonly reported triggers (61%, 46% and 40%, respectively), and seasonal onset of symptoms was reported by 54% of respondents. In total, 71% of respondents reported using two or more treatments. The most common treatments were supplements (68%), nose nets (63%), light-blocking masks (48%), bodywork (48%) and pharmaceutical compounds (38%). Overall, treatments were considered ineffective by 33% of respondents. The findings were in agreement with surveys from the Northern Hemisphere. Of note was the perception of bright light as a primary trigger, alongside the reported low treatment efficacy of light-blocking masks. Seasonal intensification of symptoms and its relationship to day length merits further exploration.

Circadian biology's impact on human physical health and its role in disease development and progression is widely recognized. The forefront of circadian rhythm research now focuses on translational applications to clinical medicine, aiming to enhance disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment responses. However, the field of circadian medicine has predominantly concentrated on human healthcare, neglecting its potential for transformative applications in veterinary medicine, thereby overlooking opportunities to improve non-human animal health and welfare. This review consists of three main sections. The first section focuses on the translational potential of circadian medicine into current industry practices of agricultural animals, with a particular emphasis on horses, broiler chickens, and laying hens. The second section delves into the potential applications of circadian medicine in small animal veterinary care, primarily focusing on our companion animals, namely dogs and cats. The final section explores emerging frontiers in circadian medicine, encompassing aquaculture, veterinary hospital care, and non-human animal welfare and concludes with the integration of One Health principles. In summary, circadian medicine represents a highly promising field of medicine that holds the potential to significantly enhance the clinical care and overall health of all animals, extending its impact beyond human healthcare.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to describe the prevalence, severity, and trajectory of internal lymphedema, external lymphedema, and fibrosis in patients with oral cavity or oropharyngeal (OCOP) cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS: One hundred twenty patients with newly diagnosed OCOP cancer were enrolled in a prospective longitudinal study. Recruitment was conducted at a comprehensive medical center. Participants were assessed pretreatment; at end of treatment; and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months post-cancer treatment. Validated clinician-reported measures and computed tomography were used to assess the study outcomes. RESULTS: Seventy-six patients who completed the 9- or 12-month assessments were included in this report. Examination of the external lymphedema and fibrosis trajectories revealed that the total severity score peaked between the end of treatment and 3 months posttreatment and then decreased gradually over time but did not return to baseline by 12 months posttreatment (P < .001). The longitudinal patterns of severity scores for patients treated with surgery only or with multimodality therapy were similar. Examination of the internal swelling trajectories revealed that all patients experienced a significant increase in sites with swelling immediately posttreatment. For patients treated with surgery only, swelling was minimal and returned to baseline by 9 to 12 months posttreatment. Patients receiving multimodal treatment experienced a gradual decrease in number of sites with swelling during the 12-month posttreatment period that remained significantly above baseline (P < .05). Computed tomography revealed different patterns of changes in prevertebral soft tissue and epiglottic thickness in the surgery-only and multimodality treatment groups during the 12-month posttreatment period. There were minimal changes in thickness in both regions in the surgery-only group. Patients with multimodal treatment had significant increases in thickness in both regions 3 months posttreatment that remained thicker at 12 months than at baseline (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Lymphedema and fibrosis are the common complications of OCOP cancer therapy. Routine assessment, monitoring, and timely treatment of lymphedema and fibrosis are critical.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adverse neurological effects after cancer therapy are common, but biomarkers to diagnose, monitor, or risk stratify patients are still not validated or used clinically. An accessible imaging method, such as fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) of the brain, could meet this gap and serve as a biomarker for functional brain changes. We utilized FDG PET to evaluate which brain regions are most susceptible to altered glucose metabolism after chemoradiation in patients with head and neck cancer (HNCa). METHODS: Real-world FDG PET images were acquired as standard of care before and after chemoradiation for HNCa in 68 patients. Linear mixed-effects voxelwise models assessed changes after chemoradiation in cerebral glucose metabolism quantified with standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR), covarying for follow-up time and patient demographics. RESULTS: Voxelwise analysis revealed two large clusters of decreased glucose metabolism in the medial frontal and polar temporal cortices following chemoradiation, with decreases of approximately 5% SUVR after therapy. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide evidence that standard chemoradiation for HNCa can lead to decreased neuronal glucose metabolism, contributing to literature emphasizing the vulnerability of the frontal and anterior temporal lobes, especially in HNCa, where these areas may be particularly vulnerable to indirect radiation-induced injury. FDG PET shows promise as a sensitive biomarker for assessing these changes.

Genomic and transcriptomic analysis has furthered our understanding of many tumors. Yet, thyroid cancer management is largely guided by staging and histology, with few molecular prognostic and treatment biomarkers. Here, we utilize a large cohort of 251 patients with 312 samples from two tertiary medical centers and perform DNA/RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and multiplex immunofluorescence to identify biomarkers of aggressive thyroid malignancy. We identify high-risk mutations and discover a unique molecular signature of aggressive disease, the Molecular Aggression and Prediction (MAP) score, which provides improved prognostication over high-risk mutations alone. The MAP score is enriched for genes involved in epithelial de-differentiation, cellular division, and the tumor microenvironment. The MAP score also identifies aggressive tumors with lymphocyte-rich stroma that may benefit from immunotherapy. Future clinical profiling of the stromal microenvironment of thyroid cancer could improve prognostication, inform immunotherapy, and support development of novel therapeutics for thyroid cancer and other stroma-rich tumors.

Prolonged inflammatory expression within the central nervous system (CNS) is recognized by the brain as a molecular signal of "sickness", that has knock-on effects to the blood-brain barrier, brain-spinal barrier, blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, neuro-axonal structures, neurotransmitter activity, synaptic plasticity, neuroendocrine function, and resultant systemic symptomatology. It is concurred that the inflammatory process associated with cancer and cancer treatments underline systemic symptoms present in a large portion of survivors, although this concept is largely theoretical from disparate and indirect evidence and/or clinical anecdotal reports. We conducted a proof-of-concept study to link for the first time late non-CNS cancer survivors presenting chronic systemic symptoms and the presence of centralized inflammation, or neuroinflammation, using TSPO-binding PET tracer [11 C]-PBR28 to visualize microglial activation. We compared PBR28 SUVR in 10 non-CNS cancer survivors and 10 matched healthy controls. Our data revealed (1) microglial activation was significantly higher in caudate, temporal, and occipital regions in late non-central nervous system/CNS cancer survivors compared to healthy controls; (2) increased neuroinflammation in cancer survivors was not accompanied by significant differences in plasma cytokine markers of peripheral inflammation; (3) increased neuroinflammation was not accompanied by reduced fractional anisotropy, suggesting intact white matter microstructural integrity, a marker of neurovascular fiber tract organization; and (4) the presentation of chronic systemic symptoms in cancer survivors was significantly connected with microglial activation. We present the first data empirically supporting the concept of a peripheral-to-centralized inflammatory response in non-CNS cancer survivors, specifically those previously afflicted with head and neck cancer. Following resolution of the initial peripheral inflammation from the cancer/its treatments, in some cases damage/toxification to the central nervous system occurs, ensuing chronic systemic symptoms.

PURPOSE: The objectives of this report were 1) to examine the quality of life (QOL) of patients with a newly diagnosed oral cavity or oropharyngeal (OCOP) cancer; and 2) to examine factors contributing to QOL before cancer treatment. METHODS: The sample included 115 participants with a new diagnosis of OCOP cancer. Participants completed the demographic form, oral cancer disease and treatment form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Brief Health Literacy Screen (BHLS), and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30). Pearson correlations and linear regressions were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Participants had a median global health related QOL score of 66.7 (interquartile range, IQR = 50.0, 83.4) with median scores for the subdomains being generally high (all >80 of possible 100). Anxiety and depression were significantly inversely correlated with all areas of EORTC QOL (r = - 0.48 to -0.78, all p < .001). Multivariable associations were strongest with the physical functioning domain (R = 0.56, p < .001), with younger age, higher income, Stage I/II cancer (compared to Stage III/IV) significant contributors to the multiple correlation (beta > ± 0.20, p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Health care providers should be attentive to OCOP cancer patients with older age, lower household income, advanced cancer stage, and presence of anxious and/or depressive symptoms for indicators of poor QOL. CLINICIANS SHOULD CONSIDER THE BENEFIT OF: initiating supportive interventions before cancer treatment among OCOP cancer patients with poor QOL.

Hair follicles (HF) represent a useful tissue for monitoring the circadian clock in mammals. Irregular light exposure causes circadian disruption and represents a welfare concern for stabled horses. We aimed to evaluate the impact of two stable lighting regimes on circadian clock gene rhythmicity in HF from racehorses. Two groups of five Thoroughbred racehorses in training at a commercial racehorse yard were exposed to standard incandescent light or a customized LED lighting system. The control group received light from incandescent bulbs used according to standard yard practice. The treatment group received timed, blue-enriched white LED light by day and dim red LED light at night. On weeks 0 and 20, mane hairs were collected at 4 h intervals for 24 h. Samples were stored in RNAlater at -20 °C. RNA was isolated and samples interrogated by quantitative PCR for the core clock genes: ARNTL, CRY1, PER1, PER2, NR1D2, and the clock-controlled gene DBP. Cosinor analyses revealed 24 h rhythmicity for NR1D2 and PER2 and approached significance for CRY1 (p = 0.013, p = 0.013, and p = 0.051, respectively) in week 20 in the treatment group only. No rhythmicity was detected in week 0 or in week 20 in the HF of control horses. Results suggest that lighting practices in racehorse stables may be improved to better stimulate optimum functioning of the circadian system.

PURPOSE: This review was designed to compile the currently available evidence on the prophylactic use of gabapentin in the head and neck cancer patient population. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted of PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to identify articles related to the use of prophylactic gabapentin in patients undergoing head and neck cancer therapy. Candidate studies were screened for inclusion and a subsequent bias assessment was conducted by multiple reviewers. Meta-analysis was conducted in cases in which the studies used compatible outcome measures. RESULTS: Ten studies were identified that met the inclusion criteria and were assessed for bias. Among the four small studies that examined pain prevention, 2 were positive and 2 were inconclusive. Three of the four studies examiniRDng opioid use noted less need for opioids in the treatment arm. Meta-analysis of the pertinent studies showed no difference in feeding tube placement (RD = 0.64%, 95%CI: (- 25.8%, 27.1%), p = 0.962) but substantially less weight loss among those in the treatment arm (p = 0.047). CONCLUSION: Prophylactic gabapentin appears to be a promising treatment option for preventing pain, reducing opioids, and reducing weight loss in patients undergoing head and neck cancer therapy. However, the studies on the treatment to date are small and several have a substantial risk of bias.

Background: Lack of reliable and valid tools significantly impacts early identification and timely treatment of lymphedema and fibrosis (LEF) in the head and neck cancer population. To address this need, we developed and reported a patient-reported outcome measure (Head and Neck Lymphedema and Fibrosis Symptom Inventory [HN-LEF SI]). This article reports the construct validity (convergent and divergent validity) testing of the tool. Materials and Methods: A prospective, longitudinal, instrument validation study was conducted in patients with a newly diagnosed oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. Participants completed the HN-LEF SI and six carefully selected self-report measures at pretreatment, end-of-treatment, and every 3 months up to 12 months after treatment. Spearman correlations were used. Results: A total of 117 patients completed the study. Patterns of correlations of the HN-LEF SI scores with the established self-report measure scores were consistent with expected convergent and divergent validity. Conclusion: Evidence from this work supports the construct validity of the HN-LEF SI.

In horses, blue LED light directed at one eye of pregnant mares shortens gestation length and results in the birth of foals with lower wither heights, similar weight and reduced hair length compared to controls. In this study, we have therefore analysed postnatal development of foals born to either blue LED light-treated (n = 20) or control mares (n = 20). Size, weight and hair coat changes were determined for 1 year and heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV) and selected haematology parameters for 1 month. Haematocrit decreased (P < .001) and leukocyte and lymphocyte counts increased (P < .001) but none of the parameters differed between groups. Heart rate (P < .001) and HRV (P < .01) increased until day 6 but did not differ between groups, indicating that foals born to blue LED light-treated mares were mature and healthy. The guard hair was shorter in foals born to treated mares compared to control foals at birth (P < .001) but no differences in hair coat length were observed beyond the age of 2 months. At birth and 6 days thereafter, wither height (P < .01) and elbow to carpus distance (P < .05) of control foals were increased relative to foals born to blue LED light-treated mares. Height differences decreased over time and and for elbow-to-carpus distance there was a time x group interaction (P < .005) In conclusion, blue LED light treatment of pregnant mares is without detrimental effects on postnatal foal growth and development.

BACKGROUND: Pain is an under-recognized complaint among head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors. Treatment is hindered by inadequate characterization of pain. METHODS: A secondary analysis from a prospective, longitudinal study was conducted to characterize pain prevalence, quality, and functional consequences in 77 HNC patients. Pain and pain-related outcomes were captured before treatment, at end-of-treatment, and 3, 6, 9 and 12 months post-treatment. RESULTS: Pain was most prevalent at end-of-treatment and declined over time. Chronicity of pain was established by 6 months post-treatment. Oral mucosal neuropathic pain was the most common chronic pain subtype at 12 months post-treatment. Widespread joint and muscle pain was also present at lower numbers. 40.2% of patients continued to require analgesics at 12 months. CONCLUSION: Peripheral and central pain subtypes contribute significantly to chronic pain in HNC survivors. Preventive and treatment regimens should be tailored to specific pain subtypes for optimal symptom control.

Long-day photoperiod is known to positively affect milk production in confinement dairy systems, and it has been hypothesized that pineal melatonin (MT) secretion plays a substantial role in this process. Specialized mammalian photoreceptors that regulate MT secretion are optimally stimulated by short wavelength blue light. We investigated the blue light intensity administered to one eye required to suppress MT secretion in nonlactating dairy cows, and subsequently examined effects on milk production in grazing dairy cows. Following a 14-d light-dark 8:16 h environmental conditioning period, 5 nonlactating Holstein-Friesian cows were exposed to treatments of <1, 70, 125, 175, and 225 lx for 8 additional hours using a 5 × 5 Latin square design. Light was administered via headpieces fitted with light-emitting diodes emitting blue light (465 nm) to the right eye. All cows were then exposed to a light-dark 16:8 h cycle for one night via the indoor lighting system (>200 lx white light). Plasma samples collected at regular intervals were assayed for MT. A dose-dependent effect of light treatment on mean circulating MT concentrations (and 95% CI) was observed [9.4 (7.2, 12.3), 5.0 (3.8, 6.6), 4.4 (3.3, 5.7), 3.3 (2.5, 4.3) and 1.7 (1.3, 2.3) pg/mL for treatments of 0, 70, 125, 175, and 225 lx, respectively. Only the 225 lx treatment acutely suppressed plasma melatonin concentration to levels similar to the light-dark 16:8 h treatment [1.9 (1.4, 2.5) pg/mL]. Forty spring-calving cows were blocked on parity, calving date and Economic Breeding Index for milk production and assigned to the control treatment or blue light to a single eye (LT) treatment from calving through 32 wk of lactation. The cows assigned to LT treatment were fitted with headpieces providing 225 lx of blue light to the right eye from 1700 until 0000 h. Mean milk production (and 95% CI) during 32 wk of lactation was not affected by treatment [20.3 (19.3, 21.3) vs. 20.9 (19.8, 22.0) kg/d, control and LT, respectively]. Within multiparous cows, a treatment by week interaction was detected, whereby LT treatment increased milk production during the first 12 wk of lactation [25.8 (24.3, 27.3) vs. 28.0 (26.5, 29.5) kg/d; +8.5%], but had no effect thereafter. Treatment did not affect plasma insulin-like growth factor 1. We identified the blue light intensity to one eye required to acutely suppress MT concentrations. Transient favorable effects on milk production were observed in multiparous cows. It remains unclear how single-eye blue light treatment affects galactopoiesis in grazing dairy cows, and further research is needed to explore whether this modality of light delivery represents a useful means to aid productivity in pasture-based dairy systems.

BACKGROUND: Cannabidiol (CBD) is purported to work for a variety of therapeutic indications. Interest in CBD products has significantly increased as patients with cancer seek ways to improve symptom control and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore patients' knowledge of and experience with CBD. METHODS: A panel of oncology nurse practitioners, an oncologist, and oncology pharmacy specialists developed a survey to capture information about patient knowledge and use of CBD. The initial survey was pilot tested and further refined, resulting in the final item survey. The final survey was administered to 100 participants undergoing or having completed cancer treatment and being followed in a supportive oncology care clinic at a large academic medical center. FINDINGS: Most patients learned about CBD through a family member or friend. The majority of patients had never tried CBD. The most common reported indications were pain, anxiety, and nausea. Of those who had not tried CBD, the most common reasons included lack of knowledge about CBD and providers not recommending CBD.

PURPOSE: Lymphedema and fibrosis (LEF) are common yet overlooked late effects of head and neck cancer and its therapy. Lack of reliable and valid measures of head and neck LEF is a critical barrier to the timely identification and management of head and neck LEF. To fill this gap, we developed and pilot tested a 64-item patient-reported outcome measure ( Lymphedema Symptom Intensity and Distress Survey-Head and Neck, LSIDS-H&N). This article aims to report the process of further validation and refinement of the tool. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A prospective, longitudinal study was conducted, and 120 patients with oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer were recruited. Participants completed the LSIDS-H&N at pretreatment, end of treatment, and every 3 months up to 12 months after treatment. SAS PROC VARCLUS was used to generate preliminary clusters of item responses. Internal consistency of the item responses within each cluster was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients completed the study. The participants reported that the LSIDS-H&N was easy to understand and captured their symptoms and medical conditions. However, >50% of participants indicated that the survey was burdensome due to length. Thus, we proceeded with item reduction, and the shortened tool (33-item) was named Head and Neck Lymphedema and Fibrosis Symptom Inventory (HN-LEF Symptom Inventory). The subsequent exploration of symptom clusters identified 7 symptom domain clusters (eg, soft tissue and neurologic toxicity), all of which demonstrated good internal consistency. CONCLUSIONS: The HN-LEF Symptom Inventory has been carefully developed and refined to allow clinicians and researchers to capture LEF-associated symptom burden and function impairments. Additional rigorous psychometric testing of the tool is ongoing to further validate the strength and internal validity of this tool.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a correlative study for E2399, a function preservation trial for resectable locally advanced oropharynx and larynx cancer, to prospectively assess effects of chemoradiation (CCR) on quality of life (QOL), swallowing and voice. We correlated the results of swallow assessments done via questionnaires and objective assessments by modified barium swallow (MBS). METHODS: The Functional Assessment of Cancer-HN (FACT-HN), the Performance Status Scale - Head and Neck (PSS-HN), swallow assessments (including modified barium swallow studies), and voice assessments: Voice Handicap Index (VHI), the Voice Disability Assessment (VDA), and American Speech-Language Hearing Association's Functional Communication Measure (FCM) were conducted at baseline and periodically post-treatment for 2 years. RESULTS: Baseline QOL and swallowing function predicted overall survival. Patients experienced a marked decrease in QOL, swallowing, and speech post CCR although the decrease in vocal function was modest. Function and QOL returned towards baseline in the majority of patients by 12 months post treatment. Less than 10% of patients had severe dysphagia and were PEG dependent at 12 months post treatment. There was a high degree of correlation between the FACT-HN and PSS-HN swallow items. Statistically significant correlations were found between subjective and objective measures of swallow function. CONCLUSIONS: Patients experience marked loss in swallowing function post CCR which returned to baseline in the majority of patients. The correlations between the FCM and self-report swallow items on the PSS and FACT-HN appear to be sufficiently strong to justify their use as a surrogate marker for swallowing disability in large therapeutic trials.

Previous research has revealed music majors, in general, do not identify as exercisers, subjecting them to various health risks. Influenced by self-determination theory, the current study examined exercise motivation and self-efficacy in overcoming barriers to exercise in relation to number of times per week collegiate music majors reported they engaged in physical exercise. One hundred six college music majors completed a demographic questionnaire regarding their participation in marching music activities and how many days per week they engaged in physical exercise. They also completed two standardized questionnaires that assessed their motivation to exercise (i.e., Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-2) and their confidence in overcoming barriers to exercise (i.e., Barriers Specific Self-Efficacy Scale). Results indicated that music majors who espoused a stronger identified motivation to exercise and had greater self-efficacy in their perceived ability to overcome barriers to exercise reported a greater frequency of exercise engagement. Sex difference were also found, with female music students being less confident (than their male counterparts) in their ability to overcome barriers to exercise. These findings highlight the motivations, obstacles, and perceptions of exercise in the music culture, providing a helpful start for comprehending what drives individuals in this domain.

BACKGROUND: Radiation for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) is associated with painful mucositis that impacts the delivery of treatment and contributes to high symptom burden. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized pilot trial. Eligible patients received primary or adjuvant chemoradiation. Patients were randomized to usual care vs usual care plus gabapentin titrated to drug tolerance during radiation. Patients completed a symptom survey at baseline and weekly during therapy. RESULTS: Seventy-nine patients were enrolled in the study (38 control, 41 treatment). At interim analysis, gabapentin use resulted in a decrease in pain (P = .004), with the biggest decreases being in the latter weeks of therapy. By week 7, the median pain score in the treatment group was below the 0.25 quantile of the control group. CONCLUSION: Prophylactic use of gabapentin during chemoradiation for HNC patients resulted in a decrease in pain, neurosensory symptoms, and general systemic symptoms.

PURPOSE: Head and neck cancer (HNC) and its treatment are associated with significant symptom burden and functional impairment. HNC patients must engage in intensive and complex self-management protocols to minimize acute and late treatment effects. Self-management among HNC patients is understudied due to the limited availability of disease-specific self-management measures. This article describes the initial psychometric testing of the HNC Patient Self-Management Inventory (HNC-PSMI), an instrument that characterizes self-management tasks in the HNC population. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey design was used. One hundred HNC patients completed the HNC-PSMI, the Vanderbilt Head and Neck Cancer Symptom Survey plus General Symptom Survey, and the Profile of Mood States-Short Form. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the HNC-PSMI, the relevance of items, internal consistency of domain item responses, and the direction and strength of associations between domain scores and other measures were examined. RESULTS: There was variability both in the number of self-management tasks performed overall and in each domain as well as in the reported difficulty completing those tasks. Kuder-Richardson values for domains with > 3 items ranged from 0.61 to 0.86. Hypothesized associations were supported. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the psychometric properties for the HNC-PSMI were acceptable. The HNC-PSMI can be used to advance an understanding of self-management requirements and challenges in HNC patients.

PURPOSE: Patient-reported outcome measures can be useful to assess symptoms in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients treated with radio-chemotherapy. This is a pilot study on the VHNSS-IT (the Italian version of the Vanderbilt head and neck symptom survey) performed to assess both the feasibility and utility of its administration in clinical practice. METHODS: The outcomes analyzed were feasibility to recruit patients, feasibility to complete the questionnaire, feasibility to review the questionnaire, utility perceived by clinicians, distribution of patient's answers reflecting symptom's intensity. RESULTS: Among the 38 patients enrolled, 37 completed the VHNSS-IT (refusal rate 2.6%). Median time of completion was 6'57″. Time of completion was influenced by age (p = 0.002), grade of education (p = 0.023) and employment status (p = 0.004). Time after the start of the radiotherapy course (< 6 months vs. > 6 months) and surgery (yes vs. no) influenced symptoms' intensity. Median time for review was 2'15″. Time burden was perceived to be acceptable for all clinicians; they all also found the questionnaire easy to use. Rates of global perceived utility and future intention to use the questionnaire were 100%. CONCLUSIONS: The VHNSS-IT has demonstrated to be a useful measurement of symptoms' burden for patients with HNC. The survey can be easily completed during the clinic routine without interfering with doctors' visits schedule, and it can help healthcare providers to identify symptoms that require referral, education or intervention.
